Cannabis terpenes – The fragrant gift from cannabis

Author: Lucie Garabasova

Terpenes are a crucial component of cannabis, responsible for the unique aroma and flavor of each strain. Cannabis is often identified by its distinctive smell, and that fragrance is much more than just a scent...

Cannabis terpenes – What are they?

During the flowering stage, cannabis plants produce not only the well-known cannabinoids THC and CBD but also essential aromatic oils known as terpenes. These terpenes contribute to the rich variety of scents and flavors found in cannabis strains. In recent years, scientific research has focused on how terpenes influence the overall effects and medicinal benefits of cannabis. Each strain contains different ratios of specific terpenes, each with its own unique properties.

Cannabis contains more than 200 different types of terpenes, with around 30 being the most prominent. We'll describe some of the most significant ones and suggest strains where these terpenes are commonly found.

Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene is a sharp, peppery terpene found in black pepper, cinnamon, oregano, basil, and rosemary. It interacts with peripheral CB2 receptors and has anti-inflammatory properties, which is why it's often found in products and ointments for treating inflammation. It may also help with pain and induce relaxation.

Strains known for their high caryophyllene content include classic OG Kush, sweet Bubba Kush, and the strongly aromatic Chemdawg.

Myrcene

Myrcene (or beta-myrcene) is a terpene commonly found in mangoes, hops, bay leaves, thyme, basil, and, of course, cannabis flowers. Researchers at Steep Hill Lab suggest that myrcene may be responsible for the sedative effects typically associated with Indica strains.

Interestingly, myrcene is also present in mangoes. Some cannabis users swear by consuming ripe mangoes to extend the effects of cannabis, which could be explained by the synergy between myrcene and THC.

If you're looking for strains rich in myrcene, consider the typically purple Mango Kush, Purple Kush, or the renowned White Widow.

Humulene

Humulene is naturally found in cloves, basil, hops, and cannabis. Its aroma is earthy and woody, with occasional spicy notes. Although cannabis is often associated with stimulating appetite, humulene actually works in the opposite way, successfully suppressing the feeling of hunger.

This terpene can be found in the world-famous White Widow, the potent Sour Diesel, or the popular Skywalker.

Limonene

The citrusy aroma in strains like Super Lemon Haze or Jack Herer is due to limonene. This terpene is already well-established in medicine, known for its therapeutic properties. It’s no surprise that limonene in cannabis offers similar benefits, such as mood enhancement, stress relief, antibacterial and antifungal properties, heartburn relief, and improved absorption of other terpenes when applied to the skin, mucous membranes, or digestive tract.

Cannabis terpenes and their synergy with cannabinoids

Research into cannabis terpenes is a growing trend, with scientists primarily focusing on cannabinoids. However, there are over 150 aromatic hydrocarbons that form the basis of resins or essential oils, influencing not just the scent but also the taste and color of the plants.

It has been scientifically proven multiple times that the effects of cannabinoids and terpenes interact with each other. For example, in his 2011 study Taming THC, Dr. Ethan Russo demonstrated that non-cannabinoid components, including terpenoids, can reduce the psychoactive effects of THC, thereby increasing its therapeutic index while also enhancing the absorption of CBD. This results in a less intoxicating effect with increased therapeutic benefits.

When searching for the right strain, trust your nose—what smells good to you is likely the right choice.

You'll find cannabis terpenes in all of our CBD E-liquids.
