The Benefits of CBD for Dogs: A Personal Experience

Author: Lucie Garabášová

The pet is a rightful member of the family, and if it feels unwell or ill, you are trying to find the best solution for them. I was in the same situation when my golden retriever Rosie got sick a few years ago. She was diagnosed with cancer and hip dysplasia. However, I soon came across CBD. At first, you will probably have many questions about what CBD is and how it can help your pet. In this article, I outline the main benefits of CBD for animals that I observed or found out.

What is CBD and How Does it Work in the Body?

A lot has already been written about what CBD is. Most importantly, it is a non-psychoactive compound in the hemp plant, which is attributed to many therapeutic properties.

CBD interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a biological system found in all mammals and is involved in managing various biological processes, including memory, sleep, immune response, and more. It consists mainly of two types of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). These receptors are designed to interact with endocannabinoids (cannabinoids naturally produced by the brain). However, they can also interact with plant-derived cannabinoids, such as CBD, which in turn cause various reactions throughout the body.

The Most Common Benefits of CBD for Dogs That I Have Noticed

  • Works great against pain
  • Anticonvulsant
  • Has an anti-inflammatory effect
  • Relieves stress
  • Has anti-cancer effects
  • Supports homeostasis

1. CBD is Powerful in the Fight Against Pain

In 1997, a study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology showed that the endocannabinoid system was deeply involved in pain management. Today, CBD is famous for its pain-relieving properties. Thus, CBD can help manage pain in many different ways. Studies have shown that CBD can temporarily increase the absorption of anandamide (a chemical that helps reduce pain signals in the brain).

2. CBD is a Known Anticonvulsant

CBD hemp is well-known for its ability to help control seizures, tremors, tics, and convulsions. This is because CBD is a natural anticonvulsant. Reports of the natural anticonvulsant properties of CBD first appeared in 2013 when the story of Charlotte Figi, a young girl with epilepsy, gained popularity. Her only hope of coping with her 300-week seizures was a tincture known as Charlotte's Web, made from CBD-rich cannabis.

3. CBD Has an Anti-Inflammatory Effect

CBD is renowned for its anti-inflammatory effects. These effects are believed to be associated with its ability to interact with receptors in immune cells. By activating these receptors, CBD can elicit a variety of immune responses, one of which is to combat inflammation. Conditions such as arthritis, MS, irritable bowel disease, and many others are characterized by chronic inflammation. CBD can help reduce this inflammation, thereby relieving pain and other symptoms.

4. CBD Reduces Anxiety and Stress

CBD can also help manage the symptoms of various mental states, including anxiety. Like humans, pets can suffer from anxiety, stress, or even specific phobias. Common symptoms of anxiety in dogs include:

  • Permanent barking
  • Chewing (furniture, shoes, rubbish, etc.)
  • Urination and defecation (usually inside the house)
  • Aggression
  • Trembling

CBD has been shown to help reduce feelings of anxiety, thereby reducing these symptoms.

5. CBD May Slow Tumour Growth

Cancer and harmful tumours are common in domestic animals and can often be fatal. While there is no known cure for cancer, treatment usually focuses on slowing tumour growth and reducing pain. CBD and other cannabinoids have shown potential anti-cancer effects. For example, a 2011 study at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center showed that CBD can cause programmed cell death, thereby inhibiting breast cancer growth.

6. CBD Promotes Homeostasis

Homeostasis is the proper functioning of the body in harmonic balance. It ensures that biological systems work to their best ability. New research suggests that the endocannabinoid system plays a key role in maintaining this balance. By stimulating the ECS, cannabinoids such as CBD can help promote homeostasis in the body. Many pet owners use CBD not only to treat specific conditions but also as a regular supplement to promote overall health and well-being.

Try CBD with Your Pets: What to Keep in Mind

If your pet suffers from chronic pain, anxiety/stress, epilepsy, chronic inflammatory conditions, or cancer, I highly recommend trying CBD.

I share the story of my dog Rosie, who had cancer and hip dysplasia. After researching and consulting with my vet, I decided to try CBD with Rosie. The results were incredible. Just a few days after starting treatment, I saw a huge improvement in Rosie's condition, with relief of symptoms and overall better quality of life.

In conclusion, CBD offers numerous benefits for pets, from pain relief to reducing anxiety and promoting homeostasis. If you're considering CBD for your furry friend, consult with your vet and see if it's the right choice for them.
